Stop Action - The Hummingbird Project

For this project a system strobes having a very short flash duration was used to freeze all subject motion. The flash duration was actually measured with a fast response detector to be less than 1/40,000 sec (25 mirco seconds!). While much stop action hummingbird photography will display the wings at the top or bottom of the stroke when the wings are moving very slowly, the technique developed here will freeze the wings mid-stroke as you can see from the images.Theses photos are of actual hummingbirds feeding on actual flowers. The backgrounds are not 'photoshopped' in place.

Southeastern Arizona is where you end up if you are serious about photographing varied species of hummingbirds in the United States. The sky islands in southeastern Arizona are habitat for twelve of the thirteen North American hummingbird species. Here the spring and summer monsoons result in a desert bloom that historically has attracted these birds, many of which stop off along the spring and fall migration routes. In recent times man-made feeders at local inns, lodges, parks and other areas help to assure the birds' survival and allow them to be present for us all to appreciate.

Kernville, California
In August, Kernville is pretty much the Rufous Hummingbird capitol of the state. These photos were shot in and around Kernville in August of 2008.
